The Riviera Stage – Under the Arched Truss

Back in 2018, a green light was given to the construction of The Prairie Meadows Riviera Stage 6,000-seat outdoor concert venue. The Riviera Stage is an AESS structure and main attraction located where the iconic Riverview Amusement Park once stood in Des Moines Iowa from 1915 to 1978 before closing to the public. While the original amusement park was modeled after Brooklyn’s Coney Island, the new Riviera Stage’s 60-foot steel arches mimic the Wild Mouse and Coaster roller coasters that operated there.

A lattice of intersecting curved and straight pipe make up the stage canopy while the crowd is flanked by two 60ft tall premanufactured arched trusses. Linking the two arched trusses together while flying high over the top of the stage canopy is the Riviera signage. The red letters are welded to two arch box trusses spanning 120ft end to end.

The arched box truss utilizes 6 curved 5” OD x 3/16” wall steel tubes measuring 36ft in arc length each. The Canopy features a larger 14” OD x 5/8” wall tube and 12” Xhvy ½” wall pipe, 6 pieces of each size ranging from 24ft to 46ft in arc length each. Because the foundation work, landscaping, and structural erection work were awarded as separate jobs to three different contractors, the structural erection had to rely on accurate as-built dimensions collected from multiple visits to the site. After planning the structure based on the locations of the foundations, the fabrication was completed indoors, dissected for shipping, and trucked to the site in larger chunks to be re-assembled on site. With two additional recreational areas for both younger and older crowds sharing space on the site of the previous Riverview Park, the Riviera Stage looks poised to be an entertainment venue and hopefully open for business sometime in 2021.
