Corten steel (or Cor-Ten steel) is a weathering steel that resists corrosion but is not rust-proof. Curved corten steel plates are widely used in landscaping or other outdoor applications including retaining walls, screens, fences, and fire features. Parks feature this aesthetically appealing material along trails and greenways. Landscape architects often include this virtually maintenance-free material for use in landscapes as it has a lifespan for ages.
Renovations being conducted at The Patsy Cline Memorial are incorporating curved corten steel plates for its aesthetic appeal. Patsy Cline (September 8, 1932 – March 5, 1963) was considered one of the most influential vocalists of the 20th century and was one of the first country music artists to successfully cross over into pop music. In March 1963, Cline appeared at a benefit show in Kansas City, Kansas. To return home, she boarded a plane along with other country performers. Encountering rough weather, the plane crashed outside of Camden, TN, killing all those on board. A monument at The Patsy Cline Memorial (2.8 miles north of Camden) stands on the historic site of the plane crash that took the lives of Patsy Cline, Cowboy Copas, Hawkshaw Hawkins, and their pilot Randy Hughes. Chicago Metal Rolled Products is providing rolled A588 corten steel plates for the retaining walls. Corten steel was chosen by the architect for its distinctive rust patina. This natural yet stable protective coating acts as a defense against further corrosion. Weathering steel arrives unrusted and develops a rust-like appearance once exposed to the elements for a period of time. Weathering steel is commonly used in structures where added durability is important along with a longer life cycle due to their corrosion-resistant properties. It is also suitable for many applications in unpainted condition.
For this project, corten steel plates were cut to specific shapes and sizes with holes in specific locations per architectural design. Each plate was then rolled to an individual radius to form the curvatures of the retaining walls.
