Curved Stair Stringers for Spiral Staircases

Chicago Metal Rolled Products makes circular metal custom stair stringers that are big, true, and plumb. After we manufacture your curved custom stair stringer, we deliver them in a quick and timely fashion. Very often the structural steel that the custom stair stringer is manufactured from is exposed and therefore must meet AESS (Architecturally Exposed Structural Steel) quality standards.

Curved Custom Stair Stringer Capacities 

Chicago Metal forms challenging helixes from the smallest to the largest size plates (3 in. x 60 in.), channel (C18 x 54.7), tube (18 in. x 6 in.), pipe (24 in.), or beam (W30 x 99). Turn-around times are from 1-1/2 to 2 weeks. In addition to providing a constant radius for metal custom stair stringer and curved custom stair stringer capacities, Chicago Metal can make curved custom stair stringers for elliptical, reverse curved, and varying width spiral stair cases. 

We created an impressive curved stairwell for Drexel University by utilizing 2 x 16 rolled steel flats. For the inside custom stair stringer, the flats were curved helically to a 4 feet 4 inch inside radius, with a walk-up-turn-left pitch of 33.25 degrees. We then rolled the flats for the outside custom stair stringer to a 9 foot inside radius with a walk-up-turn-left pitch of 16.92 degrees.

Having a true, plumb, and accurate dimension is the greatest value a quality curved custom stair stringer can add.  Our curved custom stair stringers are also double-checked for 100% dimensional accuracy.  Holes can also be added to the web of helical channels within a curved customer stair stringer.  This allows the treads to be bolted on in the field, which provides for an easier spiral staircase assembly process.

  • Drexel & St. Thomas Universities - Monumental spiral staircases can be found in various college student centers around the world, including the ones at Drexel University and the University of St. Thomas. Both centers have high, large atriums which were designed to bring students, faculty and staff together for planned and random encounters. Drexel University used 2 x 16 steel flats, which were rolled to create an impressive curved staircase. For the inside curved custom stair stringers, the flats were curved helically to a 4 foot 4 inch inside radius with a walk-up-turn-left pitch of 33.25 degrees. For the outside metal custom stair stringers, the flats were rolled to a 9 foot inside radius with a walk-up-turn-left pitch of 16.92 degrees.
  • McCormick Tribune Freedom Museum - An elliptical spiral staircase links floors in this museum which is located next to the Tribune Tower in downtown Chicago.
