Although Chicago Metal Rolled Products is probably best known for its capacity to bend structural steel and plate, the company has been rolling sheet metal steel since 1908. (Very generally speaking, 1/8" and thicker is plate, less than 1/8" is sheet.)
We use specialized equipment for sheet metal rolling of lock-seam pipe, welded pipe and open-butt-joint pipe out of carbon steel, stainless steel, brass, copper and other alloys including aluminum.
Both galvanized and painted sheet can be curved.
| Thickness | Diameter | Max Length |
| Lock-Seam Pipe 16-24 gauge | 3 to 14 inch | 10 ft. |
| Welded Pipe 12-18 gauge | 3 to 48 inch | 12 ft. |
| Cylinder Segments 12-28 gauge | 3 to any dia. | 12 ft. |
On eleven sheet and plate rolls, Chicago Metal can roll from 12 to 28 gauge sheet metal into full cylinders (360 degrees) or cylinder segments in lengths from a few inches up to 12 ft. long. The pipe or cylinders can be formed with diameters from 3 inch to 12 ft and beyond. We can bend sheet metal into full cones and cone segments as well as helically. Some grades of sheet metal bend better than others and some are more wear-resistant. Engineers, steel producers and service centers can advise regarding the best sheet metal for your steel bending application.
Our sheet metal pipe is often provided with angle rings either shipped loose to the customer or shipped attached to the pipe ends. Angle rings are often welded to the pipe, but they can also be Van Stone flanged. A Van Stone flange is made by slipping the angle ring over the pipe ends which are then flared out. When bolted together Van Stone flanges provide an excellent seal.
Curved sheet metal can be welded by MIG,TIG, track or submerged arc methods. Cyinders can be welded end to end with circumferential MIG, TIG, track or submerged art methods. Cylinders and cylinder segments can be drilled, punched and polished--sometimes before the rolling operation and sometimes after. Perforated sheet as well as flattened and expanded sheet can be curved. We can provide advice on how any given project can be done best.
Sheet metal bending has almost a limitless number of applications: ductwork for ventilation and pneumatic transfer of material; machine guards and other machine components; architectural applications like column covers, wall coverings and downspouts; filters made from curved perforated sheets; and tank bodies
