Mandrel tube bending for Amazon Rising, Chicago, IL

  • A sculpture by John David Mooney
  • The sculpture helps celebrate the Amazon exhibit at Chicago's Shedd Aquarium.
  • Both rotary-draw, mandel pipe bending and three-roll pipe bending were used.
  • The sculpture was displayed across from Chicago's John Hancock Center on Michigan Ave.


Monona Sails, Monona WI



Pritzker Pavilion Trellis, Millennium Park, Chicago, IL

  • Chicago Metal's advice about bending pipe was followed by Frank Gehry and Skidmore Owings and Merrill in designing the trellis for the Pritzker Pavilion in Chicago's Millennium Park.
  • 12, 14, 16, 18, and 20in OD pipe was bent to multiple radii, with no distortion or even scratches to snag a fingernail.
  • The pipe bending of 570 tons of steel was done with such precision that the structural steel fabricator, the erector, and the general contractor all remarked how "the trellis pieces went together so well."
  • An unsightly parking lot was put underground in Chicago and Millennium Park was created.

  • The sculpture is displayed at the headquarters of a culinary association in Europe whose logo is a motorcycle
  • The sculpture is composed of stainless kitchen implements.
  • The artist, Boban, often makes sculptures out of spoons.
